Oscars

Well, the Oscars were yesterday. Some years I watch the show, and some I don't - this one I did though I hadn't seen many of the movies, but I was intrigued by Chris Rock hosting. Here are my thoughts on the show:

Chris Rock was funny with his monologue. At least, I enjoyed him more than a lot of the hosts in the past. Robin Williams, though he can be a lot annoying, was actually kinda funny when he was introducing the animated feature nominees.

What's up with Beyonce singing 3 of the 5 nominated songs? They couldn't actually get others to sing those other songs?

I was a bit disappointed to see Martin Scorcese lose again though I haven't seen The Aviator. I really thought The Aviator was on a roll too until Hilary Swank won the Best Actress Award. Speaking of Hilary, apparently, she just needs to have the same accent as she did in Boys Don't Cry and she'll be nominated and win! At least, the accents sounded the same to me from what I've seen and heard (I haven't actually seen Million Dollar Baby). And her dress looked like it was about to choke her from the front and show off a bit too much in the back. Annette Benning seemed like she would've been a good choice to win - though I haven't seen Being Julia either. She just seemed really good from the clip that was shown.

Yay for Jamie Foxx for winning - I haven't seen Ray, but from what I've seen, he looked like he did a great job playing Ray Charles.

Sean Penn coming to Jude Law's rescue! Sean Penn, it was a joke. Chris Rock is a comedian. Let it go. I think Jude Law is a good actor, and I'm sure many people too otherwise he wouldn't be in so many movies.

Yay for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind winning for original screenplay - a movie I've actually seen and really enjoyed. And yay for The Incredibles winning best animated film - obviously, the best choice among the 3 movies nominated even though I haven't seen Shark Tales and even though I think Shrek 2 is a good movie.

Renee Zellweger looked like she had the hardest time walking in that dress, and she didn't look very healthy either.

Cell Phones & Parking Spots

So the other day, a couple of people started talking about whether there should be a ban on people talking on their cell phone while driving. It seemed a lot of us agreed there should be some sort of ban. I thought it was kind of interesting because one of the drivers in my van likes to reach down onto the floor where her purse is and get her cell phone out to call her husband about (from what I can tell) not very important topics. And she has done this while driving in places she has called "a dangerous merging point." So, apparently, she wants to make it more dangerous. She, of course, didn't say anything on whether she thinks there should be a ban. I wonder if she's going to talk on her phone now after hearing what other people think about this issue.

However, I'm sure a lot of us are guilty of talking on our cell phone while driving - myself included - but I really, really prefer not to and I haven't in a very long time. I've already been in one big accident when I wasn't talking on my cell phone, so I really don't want to be in another accident - especially if it was because I was talking on my cell phone.

Another thing that people in the van were complaining about are the people who park their cars at the transit center outside of any parking spot - like around the curbs or just off to the side of where the parking spots end. This really irritates them. I guess I just don't care. For most people, it is probably a lack of parking spots that make people do this. I'm sure that this parking lot gets very crowded - there need to be more spots. I guess my thinking is that most people need to park somewhere - as long as it isn't blocking people from driving in the parking lot or blocking people from getting out of their parking spot - how does it hurt anyone? Maybe someone will get a hint and they'll make more spaces available somewhere or build another park and ride somewhere close by. You would think they would want to do that in order to get more people off the roads.

Amusing Story

So a couple guys are going around the U.S. purposely breaking stupid laws. I find this kind of amusing because the laws are pretty stupid though I'm not sure how great it is to actually break the law and let people know that you are going to break the law. Link to some dumb laws...

Random Stuff

This has been around for a while, but I felt the need to share it. New iPods for you to purchase, including Coldplay, Nirvana, and more! Slightly amusing.

For those that like to play with the Rubik's cube - now there's the "magic" 4-D cube!

And yet another (what Dave Barry would call) productivity enhancer.

Not really amusing, but thought I'd share - this has all the desktop icons fighting.

House; Law & Order:SVU

I watched an episode of House for the first time tonight - it was this past Tuesday's show. I enjoyed it, and so I'll probably have to watch it again next week. One of the actresses (Lisa Edelstein) used to me on Ally McBeal, and on that show she played a transsexual - it might be a while before I stop thinking that she is playing a transsexual on this show too.

I also watched Law & Order:SVU from Tuesday night - I don't think it was that interesting of an episode, but I did notice that Mitch Pileggi (Skinner on The X-Files) was on the show - he was much hotter on The X-Files. :-D Next week, Matthew Modine is going to be on the show playing a character I'd never imagined him playing.

New Music

As a little "yay" present to myself after being "promoted" and for getting a big raise, I bought four CDs either at Target or off iTunes - since all four were $9.99, I thought I could handle getting so many CDs at once. I don't usually buy so many CDs, but I thought I deserved to give a little present to myself every once in a while. (I also bought a new shirt at Target).

On a side note, while I was at Target looking at CDs and trying to find something to hook my iPod up to Jon's stereo, which I was unsuccessful at, I ran into a friend from law school. She gave birth to her daughter while we were starting our last semester of our 3rd year. So her daughter is now 5, and she said she also has a son. It was great to run into her - though I thought later that I wish I could've shared that I also had a child. :-(

Anyway, back to the CDs that I bought:

Joss Stone - Mind, Body & Soul - I really like this CD so far. I've listened to all the songs. There are a couple that I'm not sure about, but for the most part, I really like it. She's got a kind of R&B feel - if you like that kind of music.

Keane - Hopes & Fears I also like this CD. Their music is a lot like Coldplay or like the music on the Garden State soundtrack -it's mellow.

The Killers - Hot Fuss - I really haven't listened to the whole CD yet, but it seems like it could be enjoyable. I do like the two songs they've played on the radio. I suppose these guys would be considered rock or alternative or something along those lines.

Snow Patrol - Final Straw - They are a lot Coldplay to me, as well. I haven't listened to the whole CD yet, but I've liked the songs I've heard so far.

Jon also bought me two CDs for Valentine's Day and our 9 years of being together as a couple:

Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions - I also like this CD. I just really like her voice.

Toby Lightman - Little Things - I like most of the songs on this CD. I listened to the other day into work and when I came back home. She seems a little bit R&B to me as well.

Jon also gave me (for our 9 years of being together) a bookworm and a yummy chocolate bar. There are many other "Giant Microbes" to purchase...including Ebola and the Common Cold.

TV

A few of us were talking about tv the other night, and it got me to thinking of the shows I watch.

Sunday

8 - Nothing really - I'll sometimes watch The Simpsons, but most of the time I'm watching a movie at this time or reading a book.

9 - Most of the time Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Though I have watched Desperate Housewives before. Last night, I was going to watch Law & Order, but it wasn't on, but I forgot about Desperate Housewives. :-(

Monday

I'll watch The Daily Show at 7 (love this show), but after that there's nothing until 10, so I watch a movie. At 10, Medium is on. I usually try to remember to record this though since 10 is my bedtime. Most of the time I forget that it's on though I do like the show. I'll have to try to
remember tonight.

Tuesday

Again, I'll watch The Daily Show at 7. Sometimes I'll watch American Idol at 8 - though most of the time the tv is on while I read my book. I'll then watch Scrubs at 9, though everyone keeps talking about House (also on at 9), so maybe I'll start watching that instead of Scrubs or I'll record one of them.

Wednesday

Daily Show at 7.

At 8 is Lost - I really like this show. Smallville is on at the same time, but I haven't really been watching it this season b/c Lost is on instead.

At 9, there really isn't much on. Sometimes I'll have American Idol on, but again, I'm usually reading my book while the tv is on. I used to watch The West Wing, but I haven't watched that in at least 2 years, if not more, because something used to conflict with it, but I can't remember what that was.

Sometimes I'll record Law & Order, or CSI: New York, but I haven't been lately.

Thursday

Daily Show at 7

At 8 - I watch Survivor, though I have been recording Joey when Survivor has been on. I like both of these shows. And I may like Will & Grace again now that Ed Burns is going to be on the show.

At 9 - The Apprentice. And I record CSI (when I remember). I like both of these shows too.

I've stopped watching ER except for last Thursday night's show - I may start watching it again...maybe.

Friday

Daily Show at 7, then nothing - though Jon has been watching Numbers (when we remember it's on).

Saturday

Nothing - though I do sometimes record SNL.

Most of them I could probably miss and it would be o.k., however, I really like Lost so I don't think I'd want to miss that show. However, I do like watching Survivor, The Apprentice, Medium, Scrubs, and, of course, The Daily Show.

Movie, TV, and Exercise

Movie - I watched Girl with a Pearl Earring with Jon last night - we both thought it was boring - I guess I feel the same about the movie that I did about the book. Though Scarlett Johannsen did play a different character than I have seen her do in the past with In Good Company and Lost in Translation.

TV - I just go through watching Scrubs - I thought the first part was pretty funny. And apparently, Clay Aiken (of American Idol fame) was on it. I thought the guy looked familiar and when he started singing, I then recognized who it was.

Exercise - So last week and again this week, I have been trying to exercise in my effort to get a decent time running the St. Patty's Day race, and well, to get in shape too. We'll see if it helps. I've been working out at work most of the time, though I have come home to work out - which is a little more difficult because I have very little motivation to work out when I get home.

Bands

Last night, I was looking around on iTunes to get a song that was in the movie Garden State, but not on the movie soundtrack, and I came across two bands that I thought might be interesting. They both seem to fit in with the type of music that is on the Garden State soundtrack, so if you like that, you might like these guys.

Keane (I actually saw them on SNL a few weeks back)

and

Snow Patrol

Hopefully, soon, I'll get their CDs. :-D But first, I must get Joss Stone CDs and The Killers CD.

Even More Movie Reviews

I saw quite a few movies this weekend - basically, I didn't feel that great (stupid headache for the past few days), so I laid down and watched a bunch of movies on Saturday. They were - Elf; Saved! ; Mean Creek; and American Splendor. I also saw In Good Company on Sunday. Read the reviews at your own risk (though I don't really spoil anything, I don't think, except for maybe In Good Company.

Elf - I thought this was a good movie - it seems like the kind of movie that you could watch every Christmas - though I don't know if I will. I thought Will Ferrell was pretty funny in this role. And apparently, the guy that once played Monica's rich boyfriend on Friends directed this movie - Jon Favreau.

Saved! - I liked this movie though it did seem a bit cheesy at the end. I thought it was an o.k story to show how a Christian group deals with homosexuality, teen pregnancy, drugs, etc.

Mean Creek - This was a good movie, but it was definitely sad. I thought the kids were making some stupid decisions, but I guess people do that sometime when they're stressed out. I didn't like the ending though - it just seemed to end very abruptly.

American Splendor - this was o.k. and somewhat interesting. I wasn't expecting to have the real-life person (Harvey Pekar) to be in the movie in several parts. It was a bit strange to have Paul Giamatti playing this guy, then next show the real-life guy on the David Letterman show that was originally aired back in the 80s. Plus, there were interviews of the real-life people mixed in with the movie part. Strange, but interesting.

In Good Company - I really enjoyed this movie. I liked that it wasn't a typical Hollywood ending when the guy gets the girl. I thought all of the actors did a great job. I would watch this movie again (though probably not until it's out on DVD).

On a side note, one thing I noticed about a lot of the movies I watched on Friday & Monday was that when people get together, they must always have kids a few years later. They can't possibly just be with each other and still love each other - no, there must be kids. I'm thinking of Wimbledon and Elf when I'm saying this.

More Movie Reviews

Tonight Jon and I watched two movies - the first one was "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" and the second one was "Wimbledon".

The first one, obviously Jon's choice, just isn't my type of movie. I fell asleep halfway through and couldn't get myself to stay awake to watch it. Jon said he liked it though.

The second one was so predictable and I really couldn't believe any part of the story. I like the actors, particularly Paul Bettany, but it just wasn't that good of a movie. As far as romantic sports movies go, I like "The Cutting Edge" a whole lot better. At least, that seemed a bit more believable to me than this movie. Plus, it has D.B. Sweeney in it. :-D

This weekend, I hope to get around to watching "Saved!", "Elf", and
"Mean Creek" though we don't need to bring them back until Wednesday.

Book Review

I recently finished reading "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult. It was a very good book, and I recommend it to those who are interested in these types of books. The book is told from different people's perspectives who are trying to cope with a 16-year old girl who has leukemia and how it affects others around her - including, and most importantly, the 13-year old girl who was brought into this world specifically so she can help her sister fight leukemia. I think the author does a great job in showing and describing how everyone involved deals with this fact and how it impacts those they interact with - for example, how the mother treats her other children and how they react to her.

I now want to read other books Jodi Picoult has written.

Other (much better) reviews of My Sister's Keeper...

#1
#2

And I agree with one of the reviews - if you're the kind of person that likes to read the ending before starting a book - don't do it with this book. I was kind of disappointed by the ending, but the book was still very good.

Stuff

1) Well, the day started out crappy and it's going to end crappy. I miss the van this morning by just a little bit. I broke a nail (it hurt!) opening my car door when it was iced shut. And just a little while ago, I looked really bad (well, I think it was really bad) in front of my boss just in time for my annual review! I just missed something that should have been easy to see, but nope, I missed it. Yay for me! They'll never want to hire me as an attorney if I miss simple things like that.

2) Anyway, I saw a couple movies this weekend. Open Water and Napoleon Dynamite.
Open Water was a bit of a bore though I was interested to find out what happened to the people. It was interesting to watch their change in mood throughout the whole thing but it definitely is not something that I will want to watch again.

Napoleon Dynamite was a good movie - it definitely had some funny moments. and some nostalgia moments. I did fall asleep watching it Saturday night, but that was only b/c I was exhausted for I have no idea what reason. All I did that day was have lunch and go shopping with Emily at UVillage and later Jon and I went to dinner with Paul before Jon and Paul played Axis and Allies. So anyway, the next day, I watched the rest of the movie and enjoyed it.

3) We watched the Super Bowl yesterday. Robert, Jennifer, and Zoe watched half of it with us after Zoe & Sid's guitar lesson.

The game was kinda boring despite it being a close game, the commercials were o.k., and the halftime was kind boring - though Paul McCartney did strip off some clothing - o.k. it was just his jacket and he had a shirt on underneath (good thing too).

I like The Beatles music, but I really think they needed to have some artist or band a little bit more up to date. And I know they can find someone that won't have a wardrobe malfunction or otherwise offend most people.

Speaking of Global Warming

Apparently, Michael Crichton has a new book out called State of Fear, and some scientists aren't happy about what he wrote while some conservatives think he's telling "the real story" of global warming.

Movie Review - The Day After Tomorrow

I just got through watching The Day After Tomorrow - read comments at your own risk...

It wasn't a completely bad movie, but it wasn't good either. Even if the science is wrong or right in this movie, that's not what bugs me about this movie. What bugs me is that people are incredibly stupid - I imagined that the stupid reporter in the movie getting hit by debris would most likely be "Danger Jim" Forman if anything happened around here. If there are big tornadoes nearby you, do you stand outside and watch it when it is just several feet away from you? No, you go find shelter.

And why when they needed warmth in the library, didn't they burn the tables and chairs first, then the books? Though it was kinda funny when the guy said, "there's some tax law books over here."

And just an observation about certain people, the person playing the Vice-President seemed a lot like Cheney (in looks and personality - stubborn and comes across as a bit of an a**) and the President seemed a bit like Bush (not in looks but in how SNL and other shows depict him as - stupid and asking Cheney and others what he should do).

More Stuff

Yes, I don't have any more motivation to work today.

1) So I KNOW that everyone wants to have some "moan tones" for their cell phone.

2) For Tetris fans... or how about this game controller.

3) Vacuum dresses? I know everyone wants one of these too - they seem kinda creepy to me.

4) An interesting idea - having part of a novel delivered to your inbox every day.

Stuff

1) I know some people like to read Mimi Smartypants blog, so I thought I would share this in case it isn't already known - there is a book out containing some of her blog entries.

Hmm, perhaps if I became more witty, I could get my blog entries turned into a book....hmm, that's probably not going to happen - the witty part and the book part. :-)

2) So I'm reading on Dave Barry's blog about this guy and his wife who rent a movie from some Safeway, and it turns out not to be what they thought it was going to be but it was some porn. Instead of turning off because they were so upset, they kept watching it. As devout Baptists, they were shocked but they couldn't stop watching it. Hmm, perhaps they actually enjoyed it and that's why they didn't stop watching it or perhaps it is like a train wreck and you can't help but stare.

3) Some popular movies done in 30 seconds as performed by bunnies. I've only seen Jaws and Titanic, but they seem like they could be mildly entertaining.

Movie Suggestions?

Way back when, I had a couple entries on movies that I had some interest in seeing. Now, I'm trying to put the lists together and add some other movies I maybe hadn't thought of so when I got the video store (whenever that might be - perhaps I'll never have to go if I keep borrowing movies from my parents), I'll remember what to look for.

Anyway, so if anyone has any ideas on some good movies to watch - let me know so I can add them to my list. :-D

Interesting Stuff

1- Happy Groundshog Day! Unfortunately, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow - 6 more weeks of winter (though it certainly doesn't feel like it outside - at least not here).

2 - There's a book out called Slayer Slang - A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Lexicon I found out about it on this website talking about different slang words used across the country, including ones the slang that people picked up from shows like Buffy.

3) There's a 2nd Miss Congeniality coming out? I thought the first one was o.k., but I really didn't see the need for a second one though I will probably watch it at some point. But one movie that I really didn't think there needed to be a second, or even a first one (though I've never seen the first one) is Deuce Bigalow. I saw the poster for it the other day when I went to go see Sideways.

4) Also, Dave Barry's Guide to Guys Movie is as well? That should be interesting.

5) And apparently Audrey Tautou is going to play Sophie Neveu in The Da Vinci Code. That doesn't really surprise me.

6) And because we can't have enough tv shows made into movies, they are making a Miami Vice movie.

7) For those of you who like to read about how some movies deviate from the book or how certain things were left out of a movie, here's a website for the Lord of the Rings movies.

Alright, that's all for now. My lunch break is over. :-(

Myself & The Future

So a coworker of mine knows this person who seems to have some psychic ability. Though part of me doesn't want to believe in such things, it's hard not to believe a little sometimes just to give yourself some hope of knowing what's going to happen in your future.

Anyway, my coworker sent pictures of all of us here at work to her friend (she lives in Florida) just to see what she would say about us without my coworker saying anything about us.

A couple people she just said that they were great friends (which is very true - they do everything together, it seems like - it almost seems like they're attached at the hip).

Another coworker she mentioned that she will get married to a person who is in love with her, but she doesn't realize it yet. This is interesting b/c this particular coworker wonders a lot if she'll ever meet someone and get married.

Then about me, she said that I have an inner sadness. I have a smile on my face, but in my eyes, there is sadness. I'm missing something. I need to be more confident of myself. More sure of myself. Keep trying on having a baby. She didn't see one at the moment, but not to worry! She also said that I needed to be more presentable or at least do something to make myself feel more confident.

As you all know, I've been wanting a baby for some time now, so I think it's interesting that she brought that up on her own. And I think her description of me is pretty dead on.

I'm not sure what to think on what she told my coworker about me, but, like I said, it's hard not to believe what she says because I guess I just need as many people as possible to tell me that things are going to work out. I guess I was hoping a little she would say she say a baby in the near future. :-)

She also said that she sees an earthquake in our near future - the size of the last big one. We'll see about that. :-D

Bar Dues

So last night I decided I should probably get around to paying those bar dues - thinking I still had until 02/10 to pay them and to send in my CLE report as well. Oh no. I had until 02/01 to send all this stuff in, so I filled it out, went to a Kinko's to copy the info, and went to the post office on 175th & 15th to send it out. Luckily, it just had to postmarked by 02/01 to be o.k. I felt like such an idiot, and why do people have to drive 10 miles under the speed limit when you're in a hurry? WHY? And I didn't know, until last night, that the Kinko's by the post office in Northgate is no longer there - it's now a 24 Hour Fitness! UGH! So Jon found me another one by Costco at Aurora Village.

Then, after I sent it all in, I remembered that I didn't put down the date I listened to the tapes for the A/V credits. So this morning, I had to call up the WSBA to ask them what to do. I had to fill out a supplemental form and send it to them.

Since I was in the "do stuff" mood, I decided to fill out the tax form - at first, I did it wrong and I had us getting a nice little sum, but I came back after eating some dinner to do it right. We still get some money, just not as nice as what I thought it was going to be at first. I'm curious with the medical/dental expenses though - can I count the money I paid out of my own pocket for my crown/awnly/whatever? Would I have to send in something to show that?

So much for my relaxing evening of doing some yoga!
