Alrighty…I wish I knew more about philosophers. The cast of characters has four named after philosophers, Locke, Hume, Burke, Rousseau. Is there a connection between the philosopher and the character? And for giggles, well just say that Dr. Jack Shepard is taking the Jesus role of the Good Shepard. Hey, he sacrificed himself for his friends, he can work miracles on the surgery table. So, mix up a bunch of Enlightenment thinkers, and Jesus, and what do you get?

“Not in Portland”
Julie’s husband killed by bus. How convenient. Yes, it hints like a hammer that the DHARMA Initiative is powerful. How about a little subtlety, Julie’s husband suddenly dies of something very mysterious. And DHARMA people visiting her in the morgue. Come on!
“Flashes Before Your Eyes”
Is there free will? “The universe has a way of course correcting.”
“Stranger in a Strange Land”
So, Jack’s tattoo means “leader, great man,…he walks amongst us but he is not one of us” and that makes Jack lonely & angry.

Huh. I've been deliberately NOT analyzing Lost, but now I'm interested. I now wonder how many professors are being tortured with papers examining the significance.
Re: Not in Portland, I disagree. I don't think subtlety was called for, because the show is trying to show how she was forced into her current situation.
Posted by: Dandelion at February 26, 2007 09:40 AMthe bus was just silly...they could've subtly showed that she was forced.
Ex-husband is killed in a car-jacking. Or car wreck. They give condolances...later she sees them leaving her sister's appartment, she runs up, her sister says, "look what a wonderful bunch of flowers I got from Portland".
