Can I get little “howdy”?
Can I get a medium size “yahoo !”?
And can I get a Big OL’ South Tacoma “Yippee-ki-yay!!!!”
And that’s how we started off the gig today with a little bit of call-and-response with the audience. It went pretty good, decent enough turn out, about two-dozen. The mistakes were minor. We got PM singing a tune all by his lonesome.
This gig was Blub’s turn to pick the set list. Most the time it was me and Blub on guitars, and Blub singing, ‘cuz her voice is all pretty soundin’.
Set List:
“Older” by They Might Be Giants (me & PM sang, me on drum, PM on bass)
“Fools Names” by Blub
“Jolene” by the one, the only, Ms. Dolly Parton (PM on bass)
“Cigarette” by Blub
“Old 97” traditional (?)
“Bob” by Weird Al Yankovic, (I sang, PM on bass, I attempted slide guitar)
“Put another log on the Fire” S. Silversteen (PM & I sang, PM bass)
“Rock Candy Mountain” traditional (?) ….(PM sang )
“Day Dream Believer” the Monkeys (no guitar from Blub)
the encore
“Creque Alley” the Momas & the Papas (Blub on Amazon flute solo & PM on panpipe solo)
…and I got her to sing & play what is the crowd favorite… “Not Picasso” by Blub
gig talk
For a couple of seconds, I totally forgot how to strum the guitar.
I mostly remembered my lyrics, but I had cheat sheets in front of me. Yeah, I know, they were folk songs & country songs…I should’ve learned the parts.
I followed Blub decently on “Fools Names” & “Cigarette” but I still am not totally up to snuff on knowing those songs. At the last second Blub informed me she wasn’t playing guitar for “Creeque Alley” and so I was too nervous to sing along as I sometimes do on that one.
I kinda wish we had a recording of it. I kinda am curious how about how we did. What we can do better next time. Maybe we can talk AfterCix Labs into maybe doing a little video-recording next time.
I think this is the best we’ve performed together. We are learning to play with each other, teamwork & all that stuff. PM & I have been playing for years, and I have got to say that him marrying Blub has helped him as a musician a lot. He and I used to joke, “…what we need is to get a real singer…” Then one day, when we were joking about that and other things we needed, PM said, “I’m working on getting us a singer.” And that is how I first heard of Blub, but was too dumb to pick up on the hint. (Viva Wisconsin)
I enjoyed the set. And there were songs I never would have encountered or chosen to play. So I got new musical experiences, which I am hoping will help make me a better musician.
...and because I know ya wanna know...I dressed up, C&W boots, blue-jeans, white shirt, bolo & my black hat. It got giggles from some of the crowd.
We had all ages show up which was fun. The toddlers were singing along which was great.
Next gig...I get to chose the set list.
:-)
Wish I could have seen that! Especially the "Bob" song! Funny!
